So, Goodbye Then...

A Note from the Editor:

My favorite movie is La Dolce Vita, a Fellini film about the decadent café life in Rome circa 1960, with lots of Vespas and beautiful Italians saying things like “Ciao, Marcello” to Marcello Mastroianni as he wanders through the night in his sunglasses, a burned-out celebrity journalist trying to find his soul in the emptiness.

It’s a great film. Anyone with an appetite for life lived to the fullest will find themselves in Marcello’s position, aware that there are deeper spiritual realities that they should be attending to, but attracted nonetheless — like a moth to the flame — by the fleeting pleasures of the night.

This month’s magazine, I like to think, echoes some of these themes and conflicts. We have, for instance, a feature on Peppercorn’s, Hartford’s pre-eminent restaurant in the Roman style, and a great piece on night clubs. But it isn’t all froth. Driving in Cornwall recently, I came across a remarkable bit of roadside art. Hundreds of white crosses planted in rows along the side of Route 4. It is, without question, the most quietly moving reminder of the price we are paying in the war in Iraq that I have come across.

Sad to say, but this will be the final edition of CT Slant. It’s been a great experiment, and a lot of fun for all of us at New Mass Media and the Hartford Courant. Over the year, we’ve been invited into some great homes, gathered recipes from the best restaurants, and traveled to exotic beaches. In short, we’ve done what we wanted to do. But as we looked forward, it seemed to us that other projects needed to be a priority. Recently, our company has introduced Metromix, an entertainment Web site that will do a lot of what CT Slant was designed to do, and we’ve also been pouring more of our time and energy into the Web site of the Hartford Advocate, with a fresh new look, new bloggers and features that we think do a lot of what we were doing in CT Slant, only more efficiently. And so we’ve decided to let the magazine go. I can’t thank you all enough for the encouragement we received over the course of the year. And, incidentally, if there are features of the magazine that you would like to see continue in the Hartford Advocate, write to me at editor@hartfordadvocate.com and let me know. I’ll see what I can do.

Cheers.
